Hun Mo Ahn*, Sam Sik Na*, Han Joo Kang* * : The Member of the Korean Academy of Medical Gi-Gong Objective : The purpose of this study is to grasp the concept of Pyegi and to find out the points of attention in the study of the classics of Korean Medicine. Methods : We searched domestic and foreign databases for examples of Pyegi used in classics and prior research on Pyegi, Taesik, and Respiration. Results : As a result of searching the Kanseki Repository, Pyegi appeared 1,710 times in 335 kinds of literatures. In the Korean Traditional Medicine Knowledge DB, Pyegi appeared 61 times in 21 kinds of literature. In the Korean Classics Comprehensive DB, a total of 25 data were searched for Pyegi, and 10 of them were translated. Conclusions : The term "Pyegi" should not be interpreted in a linguistic sense. [목차] Ⅰ. 緖論 Ⅱ. 硏究方法 및 對象 Ⅲ. 結果 Ⅲ. 考察 Ⅳ. 結論 Ⅴ. 參考文獻 [서론] 『抱朴子內篇』주1)에서 行氣와 胎息을 수련의 핵심으로 보면서 행기를 閉氣法의 취지로 서술하였다. 폐기법은 태식법의 실천방법으로 처음 제기되었고 이후 內丹 호흡수련 발전에 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 『東醫寶鑑』 「胎息法」주2)에서도 폐기법은 입과 코를 사용하지 않는다 하여 숨을 참는 행위(閉息)로 서술하였다. 반면, 『龍虎秘訣』주3)[1]에서는 폐기는 기를 감추거나(伏氣) 쌓는다(累氣)는 뜻으로 설명하고 있어 숨을 참는 행위와는 맥락을 달리하고 있다. 용호비결이 비록 선가의 서적으로 분류할 수 있으나 저자 정렴(鄭磏, 1506-1549)의 아우 정작(鄭碏, 1533-1603)이 동의보감 편찬의 기준을 마련하였다[2] 는 점에서 용호비결에서 설명하는 호흡제어 수련법과 동의보감에 등장하는 태식법이 결코 무관하다고 할 수 없다. 폐기는 단순히 숨을 참는 행위를 말하는 것인가라는 의문이 든 지점이다. 근래에 들어 한의학의 이론 방법으로 한방호흡재활운동을 모색하려는 연구[3]가 있으나 의학서적이라는 이유로 당대에 유행했던 호흡제어 수련의 용어를 자구의 의미로만 해석하여 사용하는 점은 이후 연구 성과에도 부정적 영향을 미칠 것이 우려된다. 그런 이유로 폐기의 개념을 고찰하고 관련한 한의학 고전의 연구 시 주의점을 살펴보고자 한다. 덧말
